Denver Here I Come

(Saskatoon, Saskatchewan)
As some of you may know, I make my home in lovely Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. And while there are some upsides to living here, there are also downsides. One of those downsides was rectified earlier this year when one of our two cable carriers, Shaw, finally decided to carry Center Ice. Up until that point I was watching games via online feeds - legal and illegal -, catching the occasional TSN or CBC airing and taking advantage of my bosses ability to get Altitude on his dish. It led to a lot of frustration.

However that still left a gaping hole in my hockey life that the Saskatoon Blades have tried valiantly to fill. Sure, I could take the 5 or 6 hour drive to Calgary or Edmonton to catch a game but how many times can I watch them play the Flames and Oilers? The occasional, properly timed trip out to Vancouver has let me catch a game at GM Place which is a gorgeous arena - fans notwithstanding - but again, I'm not lacking for watching the Canucks.

Thankfully for the second year in a row I am excited for an opportunity to watch more hockey. Today United Express and the Saskatoon Airport Authority have announced two direct flights from Saskatoon to Denver each day starting the Tuesday after labour day. Yes, that's two flights PER DAY.

The details from the announcement are as follows:
There will be two flights daily from Saskatoon. The first departs Saskatoon at 7:05 each morning, arriving in Denver at 9:28 a.m. It appears that flight turns around and departs Denver at 10:02 a.m., arriving back in Saskatoon at around 12:30 p.m. The second flight to Denver then leaves Saskatoon at 1:07 p.m. and gets to Denver at 3:30 p.m. Finally, United has a 6:45 p.m. departure from Denver, getting in to Saskatoon at 9:17 p.m.

So I could be here at the office eating my lunch and - with the bosses approval of course - make an impromptu decision to take a vacation day and head out to Denver to catch a hockey game that very night. It's pretty much a 24-hour round trip so I'd be back at the office the same time the next day. Heck, I could even sleep at the airport to save on hotel costs.*

So once again, it's early in the offseason - they've awarded the Stanley Cup already, right? - and I've got something to look forward to for next season.

*I would accept any offer of reasonable accommodations by Denverites willing to put up with me for a night of hockey goodness.

You know, Southwest added non-stop flights from OKC to Denver in the last year too...

Methinks we should coordinate at some point next season. Maybe see if Joe can catch a horse and wagon out of the Kentucky sticks too?

Sounds good to me. But since when did Kentucky upgrade to horses?

Hello, this is Mike the Avs Fan, from MHH (and I'm too lazy to make a Google account).

Anyway, so all of you Avs blogger guys don't live in Denver huh? That's weird. I mean, you Shane, Mike @ MHH, Joe @ MHH, Jibblescribbits, and Tapeleg! None of you guys are from Denver? Of course, it doesn't matter, but it's pretty intriguing. The Avs have a far reach I guess. You guys should all get together one of these days to catch a game at the Can. It's an awesome experience. Even though I live here, I only get to go to about two games a year, but it's still a great experience.

I, too, am lazy. Texacogirl, here. I can see it now...

I'll pitch a tent in the backyard and have crazy Avs fans sleeping in the digs. Did I mention I'm 20 minutes away from the airport? LOL

Seriously, though, Brooklyn's after a game is a good place to hang. I also spotted Q in the Blue Sky Grill sipping a stiffy after a game. Who knows if the new coach will hang there.

hey mav, yeah I had never really thought about how most of us are spread across the globe. Or at least the continent. Definitely need to do a get together sometime.

And it sounds like texacogirl has offered up her backyard as the gathering place!

The real question is how Tacogirl (yeah, I'm still going to call her that..) will keep the pixelation in place during the visit?

now that my wife is done with nursing school (yay) it should be much more feasible to get out to Denver. we've been talking about doing it for years - maybe next season we'll finally follow through.

I'm from Denver, I just don't live there now FYI.

I might be in the Denver Area for a couple weeks near Xmas/NY's (I will be there for the ol HS reunion over the summer).

I'd be up for it if we can schedule it right

I can say that I'm in Denver. Perhaps a meet & great sometime next season?

Ehhh...that was supposed to be "meet and greet."

Would definitely be up for a get together if the others are interested. I could do it near Christmas time, it would just depend how near.

Tex here, BTW, would you mind bringing an extra large double cream and a buttered croissant from Tim Horton's? Gawd, I miss Tim Horton's.

Been thinking about driving up there just for that but with gas prices and the 13+ hour drive... Oh, and the exchange rate is no longer double the dollar.

I'm sure I have some loonies and toonies around here somewhere...

I'll bring as much Timmie's stuff as I can fit in my luggage ;)
